Who are in the race for the PM’s chair?

Among the top two contenders who are in the race to become the Prime Minister, after the UK political crisis include : Rishi Sunak, a former top official in the Finance Department under Boris Johnson. And Liz Truss, the Foreign Secretary.

The UK Political Crisis

Boris Johnson’s position as the leader started to weaken during the corona virus pendemic, following the lockdown which led to a number of scandals involving parties. Eventually Boris Johnsons party forced him to step down. On 5th of July 2022, Rishi Sunak resigned.

Along with him another top official of the government, Sajid Javid, the health secretary also resigned. This paved the way for the removal of Boris Johnson. Further more resignations thereafter flooded, with more then 50 members of the Parliament quitting cabinet positions and other important official positions by 7th of July 2022.

Later, Mr Boris Johnson, still the PM of United Kingdom, having no options left, announced his resignation. In his speech he clearly acknowledged that it was solely the Conservative Party’s will, that he decided to quit from the chair.

Boris Johnson too followed suit of his two predecessors, saying he would remain the Prime Minister, until the Conservatives chose a new leader. the same was also done by his most recent predecessors. Following the resignation, Boris Johnson no longer had an upper hand in the time frame for the contest for the Prime Leadership.

Everything is set by conservative lawmakers, it is done through a body called the 1922 committee. In order to bring the number of candidates down to two, a series of ballots were undertaken by the Conservatives. This is how Mr Rishi Sunak and Miss Liz Truss emerged as the final two contenders on 20th of July 2022.

Analysis of the top contenders in the race

Mr Rishi Sunak, if won, would be after almost 150 plus years, a Prime Minister of outside ethnic origin, which last happened in the year 1868. The 42 year old former Chancellor of Exchequer, maintained the lead in all the earlier five rounds of voting by the lawmakers. Even though Rishi Sunak was the first choice of all the lawmakers, but, the final deciding vote wont be easy way out for him.

It is also to be noted that the UK political crisis itself got momentum following his resignation. His policies of governing his department during the pandemic and lockdown was quite remarkable and should be lauded for the same. But the glory was not of a long term.

He was also fined for breaking corona virus regulations and the tax status of his wife also didn’t show any positive report. Tax increases and removal of Mr Boris Johnson can defenitely prove costly for Mr Sunak in the final vote.

The second top candidate emerging out of the UK political crisis is Miss Liz Truss. The 47 year old Foreign Secretary remained in the government during all the flood of resignations leading to the fall of Boris Johnson as the leader. In the ballots done by the lawmakers, she got second only in the final round. During the Brexit referendum, Miss Liz campaigned to remain in the European Union, while Mr Sunak was on the support to leave.

The UK political crisis emerged, with Boris Johnson into his third year of his current term of five years. Whoever wins the vote and become the New Prime Minister of United Kingdom on September 5th, 2022, which most likely Mr Rishi Sunak will, or even if it is the other way round, will have two years in hand until the next general election.

The road ahead after the win doesn’t look easy with unfavourable conditions for the government and big challenges in the economy, rises in inflation and taxes. The only thing in favour will be that they will be able to set up the date for the next general election.
