After serving as Professors in Madras Presidency College and University of Mysore, in 1921, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan was appointed as Professor in Philosophy at the University of Calcutta. He was awarded with the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award in the year 1954 and also an honorary membership of the British Royal order of Merit in 1963.

In his rather late political career, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan became the first Vice President of India and in continuation became the Second President of the Nation in the year From 1962 till this present day his birthday, i,e. 5th of September has been celebrated across India as teachers day to honor the contribution of teachers in our society.
