In a first of its kind of a move in India, RailTel, a Public Sector Undertaking which functions under the Ministry Of Railways, Government Of India, has signed an agreement with a technology firm. This tie up is on the part of RailTel to monetise its huge railway wifi project that covers about 6100 railways stations in India

This PSU of the Indian Railways has made the contract with a group of companies which is led by 3i Infotech Limited for a time period of 5 years.

3i Infotech Limited is a global IT Company which is based in Mumbai. This tie up was disclosed by RaailTel by issuing a statement on the 3rd of January 2023.

How will RailTel monetise its WIFI?

There are millions of free rail wifi users in India, and the numbers are ever growing. RailTel will generate revenue by monetising one of the largest network of public wifi by targeted advertisements and also by providing infotainment multimedia services for the passengers of Indian Railways.

This move is one of its first as such an agreement was never made before by any public wifi carrier in India. We can predict the huge numbers here provided trains are the most used mode of communication in India and Rail Wifi has abundant users daily.

About The Signed Consortium

3i Infotech Limited is a Global Information Technology Company which is based in Mumbai. The other members of this consortium include, Forensic Intelligence Surveillance and Security Technologies Private Limited (FIIST) and the other is Yellow INC.

The Contract

According to the contract, Rs 14 Crore per year or 40 percent of the total revenue, whichever is higher, will be paid by 3i Infotech Limited to RailTel.

The revenue which will be mostly generated by advertisements and service or content based is estimated to gross about 250 Crores by the time the contract comes to an end in 5 years.
